On-premise virtual machine sunset

Instructions for our customers that would like to migrate devices to our cloud services, and access the latest features.

The legacy on-premise virtual machine was offered to our customers in the past for various reasons. In 2021, we moved to a cloud-first approach, removing any requirements for Joan on-premise. We kept providing updates for the software, but as of January 1, 2023, the on-premise service is no longer supported.

Please note, that these changes are in no way related to the billing changes that are being implemented as of January 1, 2023. This means that on-premise customers will be required to activate a subscription plan, regardless of their hosting option. You can read more about the changes here.

What will change on January 1, 2023?

  • We will stop further development and new software releases. That means, no updates can be expected after the year 2023. Any software updates need to be run by your IT personnel, updating the OS.
  • We will develop future device-related features with Joan cloud-connected devices in focus.
  • Our support will primarily focus on helping you reconfigure your devices, to use our cloud services.

Isn't this approach less secure and stable?

It may happen that local instances are not updated regularly. This both means that the experience with on-premise hosting is less stable and less secure.

Our cloud service updates sometimes wrongly interact with outdated local servers, which causes issues as security patches are often not applied or even the server access is configured wrong, and both are serious security concerns.

What will happen to the data?

In regard to access to your data, nothing changes with an on-premise server or without. We're still bound to our strict privacy policy that is appropriate even for our banking sector, education sector, government sector, and defence sector customers.

What happens if I don't do anything?

Servers will continue to run after the sunset. Devices will continue to connect.

You will, however, need to start taking additional care of the server to ensure its security updates are in place. Over time you will begin missing some of the new features that require your device to connect to our cloud infrastructure. New devices (Joan 6 Pro) already only support our cloud servers.

In the long run, we cannot guarantee that the devices will continue to operate with your on-premise virtual machine, and you will risk missing out on new features which will be available only in the cloud servers.

I need the advanced device management feature

We will bring all the advanced device management and monitoring features to the new Joan portal. Your on-premise server will be obsolete, making it only an unnecessary part of your infrastructure that you need to care for.
