How to minimize ghosting for on-premises hosted devices

Due to the nature of e-ink displays, seldom some “residue”, in the form of text or colors, of the content of the previous screen might remain on the current screen of your Joan device. This occurrence is called ghosting and it should not be a cause for concern.

While sometimes unavoidable, if you’re experiencing ghosting on your Joan devices running on-premises, please follow these steps to minimize its effects.

  1. Go to the admin dashboard of your server
    http://IP_OF_VM:8081
  2. Log in with your credentials. By default, the following credentials are set
    • Username: admin
    • Password: admin123
  3. Navigate to the “Settings" page of your server's dashboard
  4. Find the option “Disable inverse updates” and uncheck it
  5. Click “Save

With these settings, you are disabling partial updates and enabling screen clearing. You will see that the image on the screen will blink twice when updating, clearing the previous image and minimizing the effect of ghosting.

How to disable partial updates (for VSS v4.x and newer)

If you’re running the on-premises Visionect Software Suite (VSS) server with a version of 4 or newer, you can also disable the partial updates by following these steps:

  1. Go to the admin dashboard of your server
    http://IP_OF_VM:8081
  2. Log in with your credentials. By default, the following credentials are set
    • Username: admin
    • Password: admin123
  3. Navigate to the “Devices" page of your server's dashboard
  4. Select a device
  5. Click "Advanced" in the top right corner
  6. Under "Graphics engine features” set “Enable partial updates" as "No"
  7. Click "Save"
  8. Repeat this step for each device

With these settings, the ghosting effect should be minimized. Please note that these settings degrade the responsiveness of the Joan devices since more images need to be rendered to clear the previous ones.
