Microsoft Exchange Troubleshooting

If your preferred calendar type is set to Microsoft (MS) Exchange, you might encounter some issues and error codes in case some of your settings were not set properly. 

There is no need to worry, however. Here are all the issues you might encounter and a quick solution for them:

Exchange connectivity test

Error name resolution no mailbox [exchange-name-resolution]

Verify that the entered user has access to the room resource you are trying to add and that the mailbox for that room is visible in the global contact/address list.

Run the Microsoft Exchange Connectivity Test.

Unable to parse response from exchange [unable-to-parse-exchange]

Please verify that the entered Exchange EWS URL is correct (e.g. https://example.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx).

Run the Microsoft Exchange Connectivity Test.

Username should be in domain\username format [wrong-user-exchange]

Joan accepts the username to be in domain\username format. Please verify if the format written in the form is correct.

Make sure your Exchange server accepts NTLM authentication.

Verify with your IT team if your Exchange server accepts that type of username format.

NoneType object has no attribute content [none-type-exchange]

Verify that your Exchange EWS URL is correct and accessible from outside of your network. Since the Joan calendar synchronization runs in the cloud, EWS has to be accessible from the internet.

Run the Microsoft Exchange Connectivity Test.

500 Error [500-exchange]

When your Exchange server experiences an internal server error this error might appear. Please verify that the entered EWS URL is correct (https://example.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx) and that your Exchange EWS URL is accessible from outside of your network. Since the Joan calendar synchronization runs in the cloud (even if running on-premises), EWS has to be accessible from the internet.

Test the connection to your Exchange using this guide.

502 Error: Bad gateway [502-exchange]

This error appears when the connection to your Exchange server timeouts. Please verify that the entered EWS URL is correct (https://example.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx) and that your Exchange EWS URL is accessible from outside of your network. Since the Joan calendar synchronization runs in the cloud (even if running on-premises), EWS has to be accessible from the internet.

Run the Microsoft Exchange Connectivity Test.

401 Error - Unauthorized [401-exchange]

The entered user does not have the correct access rights. Follow these steps to resolve it:

  • Make sure your Exchange server accepts NTLM authentication.
  • Verify that the entered credentials (username, password) are correct.
  • Please verify that the user can check room lists in your organization and create or remove calendar events.
  • Make sure you have followed the guide here (preparing Exchange 2010 rights)
  • Run the Microsoft Exchange Connectivity Test.

403 Error - Forbidden [403-exchange]

Please verify that the entered Exchange EWS URL is correct (e.g. https://example.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx) and that the user can check room lists in your organization and create or remove calendar events.

Run the Microsoft Exchange Connectivity Test.

404 Error - Not found [404-exchange]

Please verify that the entered Exchange EWS URL is correct (e.g. https://example.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx) and that the user can check room lists in your organization and create or remove calendar events.

405 Client error: Method Not Allowed [405-exchange]

Make sure your Exchange server accepts NTLM authentication.

Please verify that the entered Exchange EWS URL is correct (e.g. https://example.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx) and that the user can check room lists in your organization and create or remove calendar events.

Run the Microsoft Exchange Connectivity Test.
